The Dubuque Gran Fondo is a challenging cycling event taking place over the hills of the City of Dubuque and on the roads through the nearby countryside. The route will include many of Dubuque’s steep hills and some area gravel roads. Sections of the Dubuque Gran Fondo will be timed and rider times over these sections will determine the winners of the Gran Fondo.

There will be men’s and women’s race classes categorized according to age.

Gran Fondos originated in Italy (“gran fondo” means “long distance” or “great endurance” in Italian), they can be either competitive events or just a pleasant ride in the countryside. Riders can race for the win or they can ride for the satisfaction of finishing a challenging route, either way, it will be a fantastic day in the Dubuque Hills. The Dubuque Gran Fondo will take place on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015.

The overall winners of the Dubuque Gran Fondo each get the coveted Big Sausage, an homage to Dubuque’s meat packing past and the Dubuque Packing Company, which operated in Dubuque from 1891 until 2001. The sausages are provided by Cremer’s Meats, established in 1948, and still going strong.

Best Fondo Ever. First class from start to finish. Great course, support, and oh yeah, Greg LeMond!

Thank you Dan Schmalz and all of the rest of the team that pulled off the Dubuque Gran Fondo.

It was an extremely well run event—and a safe event thanks to the support from the police/sheriff/volunteers.

The course was brutal, and I loved every minute of it. I’m looking forward to next year.

And, the icing on the cake for me… I beat 3x Tour de France and 2x world champion Greg Lemond up Mt. Carmel.

I have raced bicycles across the USA for 34 years, the Dubuque Grand Fondo was without a doubt the best run and safest event that I have had the pleasure to ride in. I look forward to next year’s edition. And with Greg LeMond riding with us—that was just frosting on the cake!

The entire event was fabulous! Mark your calendar for the 2015 edition, it’s worth the trip.

Very nice to meet you Saturday. I just wanted to drop a note to officially thank you again for organizing/creating the Gran Fondo in Dubuque.

It was a great ride and the opportunity to meet Greg Lemond in person was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

As a recent newcomer to Dubuque I feel very fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Dubuque Gran Fondo.

If there’s anything I can do to assist you with organizing or promoting next year’s event, please let me know. I’d be thrilled to help in any way possible.
